Amitabha Buddha, also known as Amida Buddha, is one of the major Buddhas in Mahayana Buddhism. His name translates to "Buddha of Infinite Light" or "Buddha of Infinite Compassion." Amitabha Buddha is considered to be a special Buddha who promised to accept all who approached him with sincere motives and give them a place in the Pure Land of Sukazama, which is considered the ideal place to achieve enlightenment. He is also known for his special methods of saving beings, such as reciting his name or the mantra "Om Ami Deva Hri". In art and symbolism, Amitabha Buddha is often depicted sitting in a meditation pose with his hands in the gesture of Dhayana Mudra. His image may be accompanied by Buddha symbols such as a lotus and a bowl. Mahayana believers see Amitabha Buddha as a merciful and great teacher who helps them free themselves from suffering and achieve enlightenment. Many people practice reciting his name or mantra in hopes of transforming consciousness and achieving the Pure Land of Sukazama after death.
